Directions

From Durban
Take the main North Coast road (N2) heading north (the sea should be on your right-hand side, if it’s on your left, make a U-turn and carry on!).  Pass turn-offs to Empangeni and Richard’s Bay and carry on. You will cross a bridge over the iMfolozi River (the sign on the bridge says White iMfolozi, but in fact the White and Black iMfolozi rivers are joined at this point). A few km’s past this, you will see a turn-off to the left. This is the R618 to Nongoma, and is sign-posted Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP). Take this off-ramp, and turn left at the junction towards Hlabisa/Nongoma and HiP. After approximately 27km, you will see a turn-off marked HiP, take this turn-off and you will arrive at Nyalazi Gate, which is approximately 19km from Mpila camp

From Gauteng
Head south-east and feel the stress leaving your body with each passing mile.
More specifically:  The best route is probably to get onto the N2 via Piet Retief and Pongola, and carry on down. You can then either take the Hluhluwe turn-off, and go in at Memorial Gate (17km from the highway) in the north of the park (this allows for a nice scenic drive through the park of about 67km to Mpila. NB: the speed limit throughout the park is 40km/h, so allow yourself enough time if you want to take this option), or carry on down to the R618 and go in at Nyalazi Gate.

Alternatively you can go via Vryheid and Ulundi. There is now a good tar road from Ulundi to Cengeni Gate in the west of iMfolozi. From here Mpila camp is 24 km of mainly gravel road.

From Vlermuisvlakte
Put on cross-country skis and head south for about 80km. Leave your skis at Sven’s snow-mobile repair and gent’s hairdresser. Take the no. 15 bus to the Gr?sfålle train station, and from here the 12.15 train to Oslo International Airport. Take a plane to O.R. Tambo International Airport, and then carry on as for Gauteng.
